Insurance

INSURANCE INFORMATION:

BFL CANADA, in partnership with Cycling Canada, is proud to offer a comprehensive Cycling Insurance and Risk Management Program for governing bodies across the country.

This program has been specifically designed to support Cycling Canada, Participating Provincial & Territorial Associations (PPTAs), affiliated cycling clubs, and their members. Coverage extends to all Cycling Canada and PPTA members for approved and sanctioned activities confirmed through their respective provincial associations.

Insurance is one important method of handling claims, but only when it is practical, possible, and cost-effective. Cycling Canada has engaged what it feels is an effective insurance carrier who knows the needs of our organization for policy coverage in the areas of commercial general liability, directors and officers’ liability, and accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D) coverage.

The insurance provided to BNL members only applies during sanctioned activities including races, rides, and training offered by BNL. When individuals are using their bicycle outside of those times, that activity would not qualify for coverage.

BNL Members who would like their non-sanctioned activities covered can purchase additional insurance during the registration process. The options for extended coverage are outlined below:

Cyclists’ responsibility code

Cyclists, pedestrians, and motorists must learn to coexist on the road together. For everyone’s safety, the cyclists’ responsibility code offers 10 tenets to help prepare cyclists and bike riders to avoid crashes, share the road, stay safe, and have fun.

  1. Always stay in control. You must be able to ride safely among others, to come to a complete stop, and to avoid obstacles—all without causing harm to yourself or others. You must only participate in events that match your fitness and ability level.
  2. You must be familiar with the course and the environs.
  3. Don’t ride on any course if you’re not participating in that field or event.
  4. Obey, at all times, the rules governing this sport and the rules governing this event. Observe and obey, at all times, all event signage and personnel, including event staff, marshals, commissaries, security staff, and police officers.
  5. You must always wear an approved helmet while astride your bicycle during an event.
  6. Use only equipment with which you’re familiar and that’s in good working order.
  7. Don’t stop where you may obstruct the race in progress or where you’re not visible to oncoming riders or others.
  8. You must not participate in the event if you’re under the influence of drugs or alcohol, excessively fatigued, or if you’re dizzy or ill.
  9. If you don’t finish the event, you must clearly report to a commissaire or designated event staff that you’re withdrawing.
  10. Understand the risks of this sport and take time to read and understand all documents you’re signing, as well as this Cyclists’ Responsibility Code.

Know the code—be safety conscious. It’s your responsibility to stay safe and keep others around you safe.

Cycling Canada and PPTA Insurance Program

Why Liability Insurance? Because no matter how careful we are, accidents happen. You can be sued by anyone who claims injury or damages resulting from your activities. You may not be liable, but you will need to be defended in court. A liability policy will pay for his defence as well as any cost awarded against you.

Types of Coverage

  • Commercial General Liability: For members under the Cycling Canada Insurance Program, the Policy will pay those sums that the insured becomes legally obligated to pay as compensatory damages because of bodily injury to or damage to property of others, such as spectators, passers-by, property of lessors, and others resulting from your operations or actions.
  • Sport Accident Insurance: This policy covers members under the Cycling Canada Insurance Program who have sustained an injury while participating in a sanctioned activity. In case of such injury, the Policy will cover for Accidental Death and Dismemberment as well as medical bills for an insured member. This policy is secondary to any other health care plan. Medical Expense Coverage within Canada only.
